Welcome Back!

We continue to welcome students and families to the 2025–26 school year. We hope everyone had a restful break and we look forward to welcoming our new class of grade 10's and returning Grade 11's and 12's. This school year, marks the school's 10th Anniversary and we look forward to working with the entire school community in planning ways to celebrate.

If your child hasn’t yet viewed their timetable, please check MyCBE or contact the office before school starts this week. For the first day of classes, students will go directly to their Connect class. We will run a modified timetable that students can review below.

Facilities Updates

Our main gym is currently under repair, and all Phys Ed and Athletics programming will take place at the Genesis Centre. These repairs are expected to continue into October. Please ensure students bring proper indoor/outdoor shoes and arrive on time to transition smoothly to and from the Genesis Centre.

Our Dance studio has new upgraded floor! Students and staff will notice this improved surface once they step foot on it. The new floor provides greater cushion for our dancers.

Our Modulars have cleared the permitting process and are ready for use. This added classroom space will allow us to reduce class sizes in many classes

Volleyball Tryout Schedule

All sessions are still at the Genesis Centre. Bring your signed tryout form. Check the PE office or @mandelaathletes on Instagram for the latest updates and schedules.

Robotics

Robotics is in full swing! Any students interested in joining the Mandela United Squadron, should attend a meeting in room 1226 on Wednesday September 3rd after school.

We’re excited to host this year’s FTC (FIRST Tech Challenge) game reveal event—featuring the new game “Decode”—right here at Nelson Mandela High School on Saturday September 6th! Doors will open at 9:00 AM, with the official game reveal video starting promptly at 10:00 AM. After the reveal, the game field will be set up for students to explore and begin strategizing for the season. We’d love to welcome staff and their families to join us for this exciting kickoff and support our robotics teams as they crack the code for this year’s challenge!

Cellphone Expectations

Please ensure your child is aware of student cellphone guidelines:

  • Phones must be turned off and stored in backpacks during class
  • Teachers may collect phones at the start of class
  • Only teacher-authorized usage is allowed
  • No cellphone breaks during instructional time
  • Repeated misuse will result in referral to administration and parent contact

Assessment Matters: Everything Counts

Learning at NMHS is built on ongoing engagement—not just one test or project. Teachers gather a wide variety of evidence to assess each student's understanding.

  • Daily participation, homework, quizzes, and classwork all contribute
  • Students may be expected to attend tutorials or complete reassessments for full comprehension
  • Families are encouraged to support consistent engagement and review feedback with their child
