School Updates

Welcome Back

We would like to welcome back our returning grade 11 and 12 students while also welcoming our new Grade 10’s back for the 2024-2025 school year. We had a successful two days to start the year, with students meeting their teachers and classmates.

Congratulations Ms. Tannis

Please join me in congratulating Ms. Tannis and her successful application to be the new Principal at Terry Fox School. Ms. Tannis has been an Assistant Principal at Nelson Mandela High School for the past three years and has positively impacted the staff, students and families she has worked with over this time. Ms. Tannis believes deeply in student voice and helped lead the Mandela Student Wellbeing Action Team that helped plan our end of year celebration last year. She is an exceptional leader and is going to continue to fantastic work at Terry Fox School. Ms. Tannis’ last day with September 13th. Please be sure to say goodbye when you get a chance.

Personal Mobile Devices

Staff and students are continuing to adjust to the new personal mobile device policy that restricts the use of these devices in class unless teachers have provided explicit permission for the purpose of learning. This policy is designed to support students in their learning and keep them focused in class. Students are encouraged to have their phones off or on silent and to keep their phones in their bags to not be distracted by notifications.

Athletics

Athletics tryouts are in full swing with Football and both Sr. Volleyball teams already having their first tryouts. Jr. Volleyball, Girls Soccer, X-Country and Swimming will also be starting shortly. Students are encouraged check with Ms. Baxter or the TVs around the school .

Visitor Parking at Dismissal

Students and families are reminded that the parking lot at the front of the school is not designed for student pick-up at the end of the day. It is much easier and quicker to arrange to pick up on Martindale Drive, at Saddletowne Circle or the South side of the Genesis Centre. We also have new specialized programming that requires students to be able to access their buses at the end of the day. Parking along the sidewalk makes this a challenge. Let’s all do our part to keep students safe and frustrations to a minimum.

FIRST Robotics

FIRST Robotics kickoff event – FTC Into the Deep Game reveal will be on Saturday Sept. 7th here at Nelson Mandela High School in the stadium. It is open to the public. Doors will open at 9:00am and the game reveal video will be live on 9:30am.
